(Un)Masking

A prototype for a new workshop with the aim of creating a shared feeling of belonging and connectedness between the participants by using dreams as the instigator and masks as the outcome. This workshop is also an approach to use art to tap into the unconscious as a means to become more aware of our thoughts & being.

The process begins by attempting to collectively dream about a certain place and time that all the participants had once shared together; in this scenario; a research trip to Mexico City in November 2019. Over the span of a few weeks, these dreams were anonymously collected online and then reinterpreted visually in 2D on paper and then later into 3D masks.

Open discussions between the participants occurred during the whole process of the mask masking; questions as to how they perceive themselves or interpret certain ideas or feelings arose. This becomes an entry point for the participants to self reflect in a natural and informal manner.

The final outcome was an exhibition of all the dreams of the participants in room #239 KISD.
